Old, new ways to help strengthen swing - USA Today 2/4/2003 By Jerry Potter, USA TODAY
First there was the Swing Fan, and now we have the SwingWave and the Swing Sock. All can be used to build a stronger golf swing, but the most portable of all is the Swing Sock, which has two models, one that attaches to an iron and another that attaches to a wood.
Rick Grayson, a teaching pro in Springfield, Mo., says he uses the sock to help his students learn the pace of the swing and the feel of releasing the club. It comes in different weights, and students are advised to pick the weight (5, 8 or 11 ounces) that fits their strength and skill level.
"Students should be cautious when using weighted devices," says Rick Martino of the PGA Learning Center in Port St. Lucie, Fla. "If the weight is too heavy, you can be injured or you can develop flaws in your swing."
At $19.95 (now just $12.50), the Swing Sock is inexpensive compared with the SwingWave ($89.95), which is a shaft in an angled chamber that's filled with water, and the Swing Fan ($49.95), which is a shaft that has blades similar to those on an electric fan.

Swing Sock Test and Review / March 2002
While at the PGA show in Orlando earlier this year we came across a golf accessory that we initially thought looked interesting though did not overwhelm us (As we were to find out later we were wrong). The Swing Sock is a swing warm-up/trainer. It is a weighted sock that attaches easily and securely to any iron or wedge. The company claims that using the Swing Sock will increase power, flexibility and consistency. They also state the Swing Sock will improve accuracy, tempo, and increases club head speed for greater distance. The Swing Sock comes in three weight sizes so there is one just right for seniors, women and junior golfers on up to the big swingers.
We had 20 golfers use the Swing Sock for two months according to the instructions and then we had them rate several criteria on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the best). Following is the summary of the results.
- Ease of use: Averaged a very high 9.4
- Improved my distance: averaged a respectable 7.6
- Improved my tempo: scored an excellent 8.6
- Improved my timing: averaged 7.6
- Improved my game: averaged 7.7
- Will continue to use: scored a very impressive 9.6
- Overall Rating: was an excellent 9.1
Following are some comments made by the golfers who tested the Swing Sock Training Aid:
- "Can't be beat - great for warming up. Especially for tempo"
- "Very easy to use - puts weight in good spot - no worry about it flying off"
- "I thoroughly enjoy using the Swing Sock. It is a great aid for warming up with. It has helped me improve my tempo and timing. I will continue to use it before each round of golf"
- "Excellent aid to use to develop good tempo prior to playing"
- "The Swing Sock really helps me loosen up quickly"
- "I like how easy it is to use and I can store it in my golf bag so I always have it handy when I need it"
At the end of the test GolfTest USA was surprised to see that the Swing Sock was well received by almost all the testers. Even our test administrators keep one in their bag now to warm up with at the range or before playing. It is apparent that the Swing Sock does everything the maker claims and given the modest cost of around $20 we think that most golfers should consider carrying one in their golf bag at all times. We understand that a Swing Sock that fits all drivers will be introduced in the near future.
GolfTest USA is very stingy when it comes to giving out our Double EAGLE rating but the Swing Sock Training Aid diffidently deserves it.
